Why Mud Houses Are Cooler Than Air Conditioners

Stepping into Kilukka Farms already feels different from city life. The air is calmer, and the surroundings feel more open and natural. But entering the mud house makes that difference even more noticeable.

Inside, the temperature feels cooler, and the atmosphere becomes quieter and more grounded. Many guests pause for a moment because the shift from outside heat to indoor comfort feels so natural and immediate.

Why Guests Feel Different Than Expected When They Arrive

Guests often arrive with the idea that mud houses will feel basic or old-fashioned. This is a common assumption, especially for people used to concrete city homes.

But that expectation changes quickly. The space feels open and well-designed, with a calm atmosphere and naturally cool surfaces even during warm weather. The experience often shifts their mindset from doubt to surprise, and then to comfort as they spend more time at Kilukka Farms.

Mud House Comfort in Krishnagiri Climate

Krishnagiri and nearby areas like Shoolagiri often experience very hot summers. In such conditions, concrete homes and apartments tend to trap heat, making indoor spaces warm even at night. This is why most people rely heavily on air conditioners and fans, which also increases electricity use.

In contrast, mud houses in this region handle heat differently. Built using traditional materials like mud, bamboo, and thatch, they naturally regulate temperature. Thick mud walls absorb heat slowly during the day and release it gradually later, while natural ventilation keeps air moving through the space. Because of this, indoor temperatures often feel more comfortable, even when it is very hot outside.

How the Mud House at Kilukka Farms Was Built

The idea behind the mud house comes from founder Shihab Kunjimuhammed, who left a well-paid IT job in Bangalore to build something more meaningful. His vision was shaped by a deep connection to nature and simple living, inspired by family values, especially the influence of his grandmother and her close relationship with trees and the land. There is also a subtle inspiration drawn from stories that reflect rural life, where farming, trees, and home exist together in harmony. The focus was not just on building a stay, but on creating an environment that feels grounded and calm.

The structure uses natural materials like mud, bamboo, and thatch. It is designed with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and large common spaces that can host up to 14 guests, well-suited for families and groups.

The open layout and high ceilings allow natural air circulation, while the surrounding farm follows chemical-free practices that help maintain a cleaner and more natural environment.

Cleaning service is available during the stay, and the host personally welcomes guests on arrival. The host also spends time with visitors, selecting carefully ripened fruits from the farm and offering them for tasting. Guests get to try a variety of fresh, seasonal fruits directly from the trees, which adds a personal and natural touch to the overall experience.  The mud walls, thatch roof, and bamboo structures are maintained regularly to preserve the natural design and keep the space comfortable throughout the year..

What Guests Experience in the Mud House at Kilukka Farms

The mud walls feel cool even during the afternoon heat, and the surfaces have a smooth, earthy texture. A naturally designed swing placed in the outdoor area and hanging plants in the front space add to the relaxed, earthy feel, blending the indoors with the surrounding greenery. Guests, especially children, enjoy walking barefoot on the naturally cool floors, which adds to the simple, grounded feeling of the space.

The temperature and air feel noticeably different as well. There is an immediate sense of coolness without air conditioning. The air feels lighter and less sticky compared to city apartments, supported by natural cross-ventilation through the open and spacious design of the house. Green and blue color-toned window glass adds a soft filtered light inside, enhancing the calm and natural atmosphere of the space.

There is an earthy, natural scent coming from mud, bamboo, and plants. Water is served in earthen clay pots and simple glasses, and food is also served in clay vessels, which adds to the natural, grounded feel. There are no chemical cleaning smells, and food prepared from farm-grown produce adds to the fresh aroma in the surroundings.

Instead of traffic or city noise, you hear birds, peacocks, and other farm animals. The sound of wind moving through trees and thatched roofs adds to the calm and natural atmosphere.

Visually, the space feels rustic and grounded, with earthy tones from mud walls, bamboo beams, and a thatched roof. Inside, simple natural elements like earthen pots, wooden chairs, and old-style almirahs blend with monochromatic tones that match the earthy interiors, keeping everything connected and minimal.

How Living in a Mud House Feels Different from City Life

People living in cities like Bangalore or Chennai rely on air conditioning to stay comfortable, along with fans and higher electricity use. City life also comes with traffic noise, pollution, and limited green spaces, which creates a fast and often stressful daily environment.

At Kilukka Farms, the experience feels very different. The mud house stays naturally cooler through the day and feels comfortable at night with gentle airflow. Instead of city noise, there are natural sounds like birds, peacocks, and farm animals. The open green surroundings and slower pace create a calmer atmosphere that feels more connected to nature.

Because of this shift, many guests notice a change in their daily habits and comfort needs. What usually feels essential in the city, like constant AC use, feels less necessary here. Visitors who choose to stay at Kilukka Farms often find themselves saying they don’t really miss it during their stay.

What Sustainability Looks Like at Kilukka Farms

Sustainability at Kilukka Farms is built into everyday living rather than treated as a concept. The mud house is made using natural materials like mud, bamboo, and thatch, which blend with the environment and suit the local climate without relying on heavy construction methods.

The farm follows chemical-free practices with a wide range of fruit and medicinal plants grown across the property. This approach keeps the surroundings closer to natural farming methods and supports a cleaner, more balanced ecosystem.

Over time, the land has been transformed from a largely unused space into a green farm with thousands of trees. Guests often experience this through fresh seasonal produce shared directly from the farm, including fruits and vegetables grown on-site. This reflects a hands-on, personal approach to farming where growth and sharing are part of everyday life.

Energy use is naturally reduced because the structure stays cooler without depending heavily on air conditioning. This helps lower electricity consumption while still maintaining comfort through natural ventilation and design.

The experience also reflects sustainability through daily interactions. Food is prepared using farm-grown produce, visitors are welcomed personally, and the overall setting encourages a closer connection to nature, local practices, and simple living.

Water is served in earthen pots, and food is often presented in clay vessels. An open dining space brings people together in a simple, shared setting that feels close to nature.
